Well, it seems I had 18 different kinds of spyware (including cookies, a phishing Trojan, and other adware to display popups) as of yesterday-- scanned with SpySweeper, and removed them.
My system is clean at the moment, though I'm sure to attract other bugs pretty soon! The internet is littered with them.
A good way of keeping your system working well (especially if you have Windows xp) is to subscribe to Marc Liron's newsletters at www.updatexp.com He has some excellent free information there.
